Five reasons curtains and blinds can make your house warmer and more elegant
Curtains and blinds are designed to look elegant, and work well in almost any environment. Whether your window is tiny, or large, you can find a gorgeous design and type of shutter, blind, or curtain that fits your need.
” Curtains come in a range of styles and designs, colours, textures – in fact if it’s a material, you can make a curtain out of it. There are various types of curtains from tabbed top, to spaghetti (the ones that usually stand in doorways, with beads, or straight pieces of rope, string, or thread, or even metal chains) to slide and glide (special curtain rails). The first thing you need to look at is the size if your window, and whether you can fit a rail above, or inside – bearing in mind that fitting a curtain rail inside a window will leave a gap at the top and will have to be cut exactly to the windowsill before, it’s better to fit the curtain rail above the window wherever possible.
Once you’ve decided that you can choose your curtain type and design – you’ll need curtains with pencil pleats for certain looks, and tabbed curtains or curtain loops to hang your curtains from.
” Blinds are an elegant solution to the problem of light leakage – blackout blinds do exactly that – and block out the light – they are ideal for children’s rooms as they make sure the room is dark enough for them to sleep.
Another great reason for blackout blinds is if you work nightshift. Other blind types can create a different look, such as roman blinds, which are commonly used in bathrooms and kitchens. They can be decorated to look several different kinds of ways, from unmoving, ribboned types, to functional ones that are decorated to function properly. The one drawback with blinds is that they can be hard to wash, or clean, so in high traffic regions, they can get dirty very quickly.
It’s also important to make sure that all of your blind mechanisms, especially the pulleys and ropes, are made safe to work. It’s important to keep the pulleys out of the reach of children as well, as it’s possible for them to get caught up and perhaps hurt themselves otherwise.
” Or how about a combination? Paring a set of curtains with an elegant blind can create a gorgeous, functional look and feel that can’t be matched by simple blinds or curtains alone. A good designer or team can support you in your choices and can give ideas and support from measurement to installation. This hot mess needs some curtains. The trick is, how do I hang curtains without it looking all wonky.
My original idea was one big wall-o-curtain stretched across, from the top of molding to the floor. But I ran into a problem. See, there’s a wall heater underneath the window that sticks out about 7". Hanging a curtain much farther past the window ledge would look awkward.
So then I figured two separate curtains, one for the door down to the floor and one for the window down just past the ledge, but hang them from the same height… oh wait… problem #2, the window is higher than the door… in order for it to be at the same height, i’d have to hang the door curtain on the molding, not the door, which would mean that the curtain can’t be closed if I want to open the door. And that issue would also exist in my first idea. Super.
So… now I’m at a point where I don’t know what to do.
Ideas? Help? Anyone?

you’ve got a point! The only think I could think of, is to use a curtain wire and mount it on the moulding. This way you can hang 2 curtains of different lengths and it should look ok.
Or go with the roman blinds or those tiny rods that installed inside the window/door frame.
my vote isfor just romans. I love the look of your inspiration room but I worry that it might crowd the room with all that fabric.
Yes, I vote for romans or rollers, mounted on the door and window, two separate sizes, I think curtains would drive you bats, and if you open that door with any frequency you’ll be forever catching the damn things in the frame.
Do you like your view? (hard to tell what it is exactly)… I didn’t read the group comments yet, not sure how you would feel with window film. I ask because they are the most hassle-free thing I can think of. You could either cover 95% of your glass (also helps keep the heat out) or you could even cover portions of it, in a cut-out pattern, ie. squares or bars, etc. so you can still see outside easily but have a bit more privacy…. is this what you need blinds for? Privacy? What’s the main reason you cover your windows? Did you ever close your blinds?
I need to find a picture of what I mean for the cutouts but in the meantime, here’s what I have on my terrace doors in winter (remove in summer so I can enjoy the tree):

The view of the neighboring house, so I do need privacy. But I also need to be able to block out the light at night/early morning… more for the boyfriend than for me.
I’d prefer shades to window film, but I just like the idea of being able to have sort of a wall of curtains at night.
Can’t blame you for wanting curtains. If it were me, I’d probably hang a rod on the molding above, all the way across. I would have a double panel to the floor resting on the left, and a double short panel resting on the right, all on the same rod. You could close them up tight at night and sleep in a bit. : )
Can the curtain fit "behind" the heater? We have radiators under the windows, but the curtains (when drawn) fit behind them – it’s not the best setup ever, but it’s ok.
But then you wouldn’t really be able to do the double-curtain thing.
This is what I do with curtains especially since I usually make them myself and don’t want to waste fabric/time: before putting anything up, nail them to the frame (on the top so you can’t see the nail holes when I take it down) to see how they work (color, length, opacity, etc.) You could start by just hanging a sheet or something just to give you an idea. You can also try "hemming" it using pins where you think you might want it shorter….. just to see.
I usually leave them up for a while and play with them and try out different configurations before doing anything permanent.
Oh and you know what – I think that having them shorter at the window might look ok if they hang nicely and with precision….
I’m going to try to find photos.
ok these are for you:

The most expensive solution would be to get one of those doors that has the blind built into the space between the two layers of glass! I don’t suppose your landlord would spring for that? What about wooden shutters? They can be slanted to let in the right amount of light, and will hopefully be cat-proof.
hi Sparkle – just letting you know I am thinking hard about this.
Do you sew?
Aww, thanks Chloe! Yes, I do sew.
SDAT, you make very good points. I think the different levels thing is the best option. Though, I’m thinking I might just do a window curtain, since I already have an appropriately sized curtain rod.
Still not entirely sure what I want to put on the door. I guess I’ll have to browse around and see what my options are.
